Wednesday, October 21 through Friday, October 23, 2026

“Me, Myself, and I. That is what’s most important” said the Self-Centered client.

The psychotherapy of self-centered and narcissistic dynamics often revolves around the client’s relational dilemma whether “to need or not to need”. This dilemma results in behavioral characteristics of self-involvement, exaggeration of accomplishments, an absence of empathy and a lack of authentic interest in others, even while others are being used to obtain approval and admiration.

In this professional development seminar Richard Erskine will talk about the aetiology, intrapsychic conflicts, and the relational conflicts in the lives of clients with Self-Centred character traits. Dr. Erskine will describe in detail the Self-Centered client’s internal and behavioural dynamics and the relational methods necessary in an effective psychotherapy for clients with issues of Narcissistic processing. These characteristics may be present in the behaviour of many other clients who may not be diagnosed as “narcissistic” but who’s internal functioning and/o overt behaviour is Self-Centered.  We will also discuss the relational psychotherapy for a range of client’s from those who are Self-Centered while acting shy, timid, and ineffective to the more overtly “narcissistic” who are grandiose, exhibitionistic, and disdainful of other others.

This seminar will involve a lively exchange of information on this important topic relational psychotherapy for the self-centered client. Participants are invited to bring psychotherapy case examples for discussion and clarification.  An opportunity may be available for participants to describe how they can use an understanding of  self-centredness and narcissism in their supervision and training programs.

In preparation for the seminar please read chapter 20, entitled “Narcissism or the therapist’s error?” in Relational Patterns, Therapeutic Presence.
